Took Ziva pup for a walk a few days ago, down in to the river as is our habit. All things normal, another sunny day on our way to play in the water.
The recent rains had raised the river a bit, more than I wanted her to cross, however she had just recently become confident with swimming and ran ahead and crossed.
She was swept 30 feet down stream in the crossing, but successful, then stranded on the farther shore. I took my boots off rapidly to go and carry her back, assuring her as I did. She waited patiently half in and out of the water at the edge, barred by thick woods and brush from going to land.
As I got my last off and ready, something growled and jumped from the thicket and attacked her, as I looked up only saw a spiral of Zivas white fur and the red brown of a larger animal. I grabbed a large rock as fast as I could and set to rush, but then whatever attacked her was released and sank into the river, and no sign of it rising again.
Ziva, impatient pup, would not wait for me to reach her, but crossed back, being then downstream again another 30 feet, but thankfully making her way back to me on the common shore.
Had a talk with my lady dog, I will ford the river ahead of her in the future, and will carry my best knives for anything to come.
Thankfully Ziva is without injury, and whatever attacked her is apparently sleeping with the fish 😉
